I really wanted to love The Underground, it's a beautiful venue that is unique in Newcastle, and it hosts interesting music regularly, the drinks aren't too expensive and tickets are also affordable.

I've been there twice now and I have to say that the extremely strict rules about not making any noise during a gig really kill it for me. Last night there was an Afrobeat band playing; music that is lively! Room was cleared for a dance floor even. However yet again there was a person walking around telling anyone that spoke to not make any noise, even though that were tucked around the corner and not able to even see the band were ordered to not speak on no uncertain terms.

Even with beautiful lively music the management at this place turn it in to a stiff library. Someone else called it a "speak-easy style bar". Speakeasys were lively places of music, dancing, laughter and fun. Sadly my last 2 experiences at The Underground have been far from fun.

Lovely venue under a great little pub, hosting great musicians, but sadly it's run more like an album party than a live music venue.

This venue has been around for years but more recently the new owner completely renovated it into a stylish underground speak-easy style bar. A tight but atmospheric set up with live music ranging from Jazz to tribute bands. One of my favourite haunts in Newcastle! Superb drinks served professionally with friendly service. Gray food too!

The Underground is hands down my favourite bar in Newy. It's an authentic speak easy with weekly jazz performances. The lead barman 'Max' is polite, knowledgeable and dedicated to his craft. Be sure to try a nip of Montenegro. If I wasn't a broke uni student, I'd come here more often 🙂

Best jazz venue in town, it's in the basement cellar of a gorgeous heritage listed hotel (Then Grand) right in the heart of the CBD and around the corner from the beach. Acoustics are fab, great jazz gigs three nights a week. Get there early to get a good seat.
