I stayed in a private room.
The location is great and the staff is really friendly and accommodating.

I got upgraded to a room with a balcony, which was really nice! There were a few ants in the room, I guess they came from the balcony, but the staff offered to spray them for me. So the service was great!

It is a bit expensive for a hostel, but that seems to be often the case for hostels in Australia, or specifically Byron Bay.

There were regular social events, but it’s not loud at night and not a party hostel.

The kitchen is big, as well as the laundry room.
I feel like shared spaces could be a bit cleaner, but obviously guests have to take care too.

Overall I would recommend it, if you’re set on a hostel. If you don’t need the social aspect as much, I’d recommend getting a hotel room for the price.

I recently stayed at the Surf House in Byron Bay and unfortunately, my experience was extremely disappointing. For over $750, I expected a clean and comfortable room, but what I encountered was quite the opposite.

First, the room had a persistent moldy smell that made it uncomfortable to stay in. The door key was unreliable, failing to work multiple times, which was incredibly frustrating. Additionally, the garage gate was out of service, adding to the inconvenience of our stay.

The sink in our room was clogged, and to make matters worse, there were no towels provided after the cleaning service. The noise levels were higher than anticipated, making it difficult to relax. I also noticed that the hallway lights were not functioning, which added to the overall unwelcoming atmosphere.

When I approached the front desk staff to express my concerns, I was met with indifference, as the guy simply ignored me. This lack of customer service only compounded my dissatisfaction.

Overall, my stay at the Surf House did not reflect the value we paid. I would not recommend this place to anyone looking for a pleasant and enjoyable experience in Byron Bay. ( Really can’t understand this awful experience all at once)

I’m pretty torn about this place. We got jerked around a bit in terms of rooms, and one receptionist showed total indifference and another more senior one upgraded us to a private room for the remainder of our stay. All in all though reception is pretty disorganized (according to many people) WiFi sucks in some rooms, bathrooms are smaller and less clean than other hostels. Location is great though and it’s a beautiful building. They organize stuff every night, so it’s a pretty social place too.

If you don’t really care about surfing, this place is a 3/3.5, if you do, easily a 4 because of proximity to beach and free surfboard rental.

If you’re debating between Wake Up Byron or this, choose this hostel. The location is great, 2 minute walk to the beach, piano bar, and so many good restaurants. There are social events almost every night on the rooftop. The private room was cleaned daily and comfortable bed.

Had the best weekend at Surfhouse!
If you're looking for a super social, clean and safe environment for staying in Byron Bay then you've found the right place. The atmosphere in this hostel is amazing. The hostel is really clean and the rooftop bar is such a good place to chill out and meet new people. Shout out to all the staff in this hostel as they are incredibly friendly and will help you with any enquiries you have.
I will absolutely stay here again!

I absolutely loved my stay here and if you're coming to Byron I would highly recommend booking a space at The Surf House!

The location is perfect (a short walk from the bus station and down the road from the beach!). The ladies on the front desk were lovely and so helpful with any query/request I had. The hostel itself is bright, clean, inviting, relaxing, spacious and has all the amenities you need. I especially loved the indoor and outdoor bar area which allowed for some enjoyable, social times.

Made for the best stay in Byron!

This hostel was the nicest hostel I’ve stayed in!! We stayed in a double bed room with en-suite, clean and spacious. The kitchen was great, loads of room and always clean with everything you need. Great location minutes walk away from pretty much everything.

The surf house is easily the best hostel I’ve stayed at ever! The reception staff are extremely friendly and helpful, it is very well managed and the vibe is elite!! Whether you’re there for chilling out or meeting new people over drinks, you will definitely have a great time.. the bar staff are so good at creating an enjoyable atmosphere! Big Shout outs to bar staff Alex, Chris, Chantal and Jess for being awesome! Will definitely come back again 🤙
