Beautiful artistic Indian restaurant with an intimate setting. The food was simply amazing, delicious with every dip and every bite. Mild in spice and was manageable, and strong if you desire. The butter chicken turned me into a cave person, just dived in with fingers due to its delicious sauce. Excellent menu with each dish a knockout. I highly recommend the Balls of Happiness, to top off the night the desert was top tier.

Perfect for a date night, not so much kid friendly and perfect to wine and dine. The food was exceptional and service to match. Highly recommend this to anyone!!

Indian restaurant in Castlemaine but they also serve things like HSP - great variety of all. Had heaps of vegetarian options, spicy and non spicy options, sides, curries, chips and other fried foods, etc!

I had the Coconut Fish ($24) which had such great flavours- flavours of the curry was such a highlight. Blue grenadier in turmeric, mustard seed & coconut milk curry - would happily eat multiple bowls of this curry, not spicy at all but so flavourful and smooth and when mixed with the rice- absolutely delicious. Only thing is I found the fish to be a little over cooked so not as soft as I’d like.

Also tried the pani puri ($14) which was my first time and absolutely loved it! Was tangy and sweet and the hallow pastry was so crispy and overall such an amazing mouthful! Would definitely get this again.

Positive reviews across the table so the other dishes seemed very tasty too

There are lots of reasons to visit lovely castlemaine, and The Royal Sultan is one of the big ones. Taste, not overly spicy, and very fresh. Start with Balls of Happiness and end with warm, squidgy balls of gulab jamun goodness. Dinner was delicious and very well priced - Balls of Happiness, butter chicken,
garlic naan, lamb Rogan Josh and fish curry. Would very happily return🥰

It could go either way when a travel story starts with ‘six hungry adults walk into a country town restaurant at the same time’, but our experience at The Royal Sultan at Castlemaine was absolutely fantastic.
The owners/servers were fantastic, weren’t fazed as we appeared (for lunch) without a reservation.
The food was amazing, of note were the malai kofta, the coconut fish curry and the lamb curry.
Do yourself a favour and order the garlic naans as well.
We did park up the road as the parking outside the restaurant was full.
There was a steady stream of patrons for the time that we were there to finish our lunch, shows that they are well frequented by the locals and out-of-towners alike.

I did not like the restaurant. The food service and atmosphere were the factors for the bad review. When you enter the restaurant, there is this sudden smell that comes from the hsp they make. The smell is really unpleasant for you to stay inside. There were flies when we were eating, which was an unpleasant experience.
The staff didn't care to explain much about the food.
The main thing was food. The food was not good at all. The flavour was out of place. I didn't enjoy the food at all.
The food was expensive and the portions were really small. I will put the picture of tandoori chicken, which we ordered for $22, but they literally gave us 4 small pieces of chicken with mo flavour. I understand its starter but either decrease the price and increase the quality and quantity of food if you take that charge. The same goes for other starters. Curries were also not so tasty. And masala tea had too much sugar and far less milk. It's not the authentic tea I would like to drink.
Overall, the experience was really bad, and there is not much choice of food in the menu as well.

Cost $70 for 2 sides and 2 mains, no drinks. Fish curry had about 4 pieces of meat and the rest was coconut goop, started vomiting about an hour after eating. Goat curry was not hot (spicy) as requested, was more bone than meat and mostly soup that lacked flavour. Samosas and naan were good but overall would not go back.

I highly recommend to visit the Royal sultan Restaurant to taste the most delicious Indian curries, snacks and kebabs prepared with love and passion by their talented chef Garry, that could be seen in their presentation and plating.
I ordered papdi chat, pani puri, paneer achari and all were so yummy and made me felt like I am in India. Service is also very fast and staff is very co-operative and nicely attend all.

Such an awesome place. Some of the best Indian I’ve had. Have tried many things on the menu, and everything is amazing. The tandoori chicken, channa masala, coconut veg curry and naan bread is a standout, always so tasty with lots of flavour.
The service is always awesome, staff are very friendly, Will be back. Definitely recommended.
