My friends and I did the Taste of Afghanistan and Syria - Merrylands food tour on the weekend. We all thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was so interesting to learn about different cultures and sample their food. The food was delicious and we all did plenty of shopping in the local stores. Many thanks to Sahar who was the perfect guide. Highly recommend!

An excellent experience which we really enjoyed. The dinner was held at Parliament on King and that night we were lucky enough to taste delicious Burmese food, prepared and cooked by a beautiful girl who was originally a refugee from Burma.

Taste of Ramadan – Lakemba Night Markets. We started at 7pm and finished just on midnight!!
The tour itself runs for 2 ½ hours but we lingered afterwards to savour more of the sights & atmosphere.
Taste dishes available only once a year during Ramadan after sunset.
More than a million people are expected to visit Ramadan Nights Lakemba to break their daily fast and experience the cultural showmanship along Haldon Street at more than 70 food stalls.

Ramadan Nights veteran and Taste tour guide Noorlindah Saleh led the way through a wonderous night feast. She was so incredibley knowledgeable, warm & welcoming.

1. Haleem at Zam Zam Restaurant & Sweets was the standout dish for me. This Bangladeshi variety at Zam Zam is sweat-inducingly spicy. It was so good we went back for another bowl after or tour despite being so full of food already!

2. Murtaba at Desi Paikari Bazar was another winner. At Ramadan Nights it’s made with paper-thin filo pastry stretched over a hot grill, stuffed with minced meat, coriander and egg, then folded, fried and chopped to serve. The Murtaba chef at Desi Paikari Bazar, Noor, reveals he learned the skill in a Malaysian refugee camp after fleeing Myanmar.

3. The once-a-year Camel burgers are surprisingly tender & some of our group even asked for seconds which I understand is perhaps a first on this tour! The camel burger by Broadster Chicken was a founding dish of the Lakemba Night Markets event.

4. Another must-order is the Ramadan Kashmiri “Barbie chai” at Mandi King.

5. And of course for a sweet treat, head to Bakdash Ice Cream who create delicious creamy Syrian ice cream, served with crushed pistachios with a theatrical show to accompany the ice cream!

We went on to finish it all off with at Dhaka Delight with a Bangladeshi Guur Cha.

Our tour started at Island Dreams Café which has been serving chicken satay since 1996, based on a family recipe that has been passed down for generations. Cooked over charcoal, pair the skewers and satay sauce with a roti canai. The Island Dreams Café specialises in cuisine from the Christmas and Cocos Islands. Their chicken satay sticks, available only for Ramadan, have a sweet and crunchy peanut flavour.

At El Manara Lebanese Restaurant our Ramadan Nights veteran and Taste tour guide, Noorlindah Saleh, says the owner Amil's falafel “is the best in Lakemba”.

The Knafeh at Kanafandi Nabulski Knafeh House was another great we tried. Knafeh is sweet with a stretchy creamy cheese filling topped with semolina and chopped pistachios.

Excellent tour covering not only food but cultural & an insightful experience to understand more about Ramadan and how Muslims break their fast and pray,

If you have the opportunity this tour is a MUST on your list of things to do in Sydney.

We really enjoyed our Taste of Afghanistan and Syria tour in Merrylands, Sydney today. Our guide, Noor, was knowledgeable, warm and funny; the food was varied and utterly delicious; and the group was lovely and gracious. It was wonderful to have a guide to show us what is on offer in the local restaurants, cafes and supermarkets of Merrylands, and explain the history and cultural context. We're so lucky to have so many cultures and cuisines in Sydney, and Taste Food Tours are the perfect companions to help you explore and appreciate this!

Little India Harris Park- food tour, and it was an incredible experience. The tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly.
It was interesting seeing local and popular businesses in the area. We sampled a variety of dishes, from savory street food to exquisite desserts along with textiles and jewlery shops.
The pacing was perfect, allowing us to shop and explore without feeling rushed.
It was a delightful tour, I highly recommend it.

What a wonderful way to get closer to some other cultures! We have just been on the Afghani, Syrian and Persian tour through Merrylands. Sahar was a wonderful guide, generously sharing her knowledge of the food and these cultures with insight and good humour. The food we had was sooo good. And Taste Food Tours' mission is admirable.
