Location and Accessibility

The location of Peter Denny Lookout is a significant factor in its appeal. Situated directly off the highway, it provides relatively easy access for travelers passing through the region. However, this proximity to the road also means that visitors should anticipate encountering road trains during the night. The landscape surrounding the lookout is characterized by rugged terrain and exposed rock formations, contributing to the area’s dramatic beauty. It’s advisable for campers to be prepared for variable weather conditions and to bring appropriate gear, including insect repellent. The ground conditions are notably challenging, necessitating the use of screw-in tent pegs rather than traditional tent pegs due to the solidity of the rock. This detail highlights the need for careful planning and preparation by prospective campers.

Perfect place for an over night camp spot.

- Free
- Pet friendly
- No phone signal
- Bin provided
- No toilets

We camped in a tent, but it is suitable to swags, camper trailers and caravans.
( we use screw in tent pegs, not sure youd have any luck getting regular tent pegs in the ground here, its rock solid)

It is right off of the highway, so expect to hear road trains at night.

Lots of flys, but to be expected.

The view is amazing, we loved our night here.

"Peter Denny Lookout: Where Peter's Picks Peak!"
When our mate Peter suggested a trip to the Peter Denny Lookout, we thought he was just trying to boost his namesake's tourism stats. But oh boy, were we in for a treat!

Nestled 30 km east of Sandstone, this spot offers panoramic views of ancient breakaways that even Peter couldn't break away from . The gravel parking area is so flat, it's like Mother Nature's own ironing board. Just be prepared for a digital detox—no mobile or TV reception here, so you'll have to resort to the ancient art of conversation .

Facilities are minimal, but who needs amenities when you have bins and some seating? It's the perfect place to ponder life's big questions, like why Peter didn't mention the lack of shade .

So, pack your sense of adventure (and maybe a hat), and thank Peter for guiding us to this hidden gem. Just don't forget to bring your own firewood—unless you fancy a game of "find the twig" in the outback .

Great spot to stop, enjoy the view, camp overnight or both.
We were the only people there, although there was certainly telltale signs of other, including numerous fire places and a little obit of toilet paper from the bush squatting grubs.
Went for a wonder down to the bottom area, fabulous view of the cliffs, caves and the water courses below.
There is plenty of room, but no facilities so it’s a self contained area.
Do remember our friends in the road trains and don’t block their area, as there is more than enough spots there that are they can’t use.
As always enjoy your travels in the best country in the world & make sure you respect it & the opportunity you have, ensuring it’s there for your kids.

Basic campground at the Peter Denny Lookout east of Sandstone with limited facilities.

Time and Cost: No apparent time limit, free.

Access: Sealed road access but gravel/dirt within campground.

Facilities: Very limited facilities including bins, some seating and fire pits.

Ambiance: Reasonably quiet depending on traffic. Plenty of sites in the bush for those that need a little privacy.

Good for a one or two night stopover when travelling on the Agnew-Sandstone road. Excellent views over the breakaway from the campground

Great site but a bit rocky in parts. It has a great view and the traffic noise is considerably less than on other major roads.
