I hadn't visited McLaren Vale for 30 years. It was beautiful in the summer heat. Wineries were as I'd remembered and the wines as good as they were back then. What was surprising was that most cellar doors charge for tastings! We paid between $10 and $15 but some were charging $25 for 5 tastings. The amount varies from 3 thimble fulls to 5. Some deduct the cost from the purchase of one or two bottles of wine.
The best winery of those we visited was 'Dog Ridge' which was a beautiful setting near a creek with tables under large gum trees. There was no charge for tastings and the man assisting us was very friendly and knowledgeable. All of the wines we tasted were excellent. Cheese platters were available at extra cost.
'Sew and Sew' was another winery we visited. We sat outside under a large awning with the vineyard spread before us. Tastings were $10 deducted from purchase of a bottle. Very good wines too. Pinot Chardonnay was excellent. Platters at extra cost were available. Knowledgeable man provided details of wine making and history of the vineyard.
'Richard Hamilton' vineyard was the perfect setting to watch the big bike ride. We ate yummy pizzas and drank delicious wine in the January afternoon. There's even a sunflower labyrinth to explore. Pay for tastings but deducted from wine purchases.
We had afternoon tea in 'Tealiscious' which was excellent. Gorgeous shop, really nice staff, cakes, scones, tea and coffee were all of a high standard. Kids loved it and so did the adults.

Lovely big visitor centre with lots there and a large parking lot. There is an art gallery which is quite a nice, big space. There are items for sale such as local food and gifts. I particularly liked the rusty metal art for sale. There is also a cafe on site. There are bikes for hire and of course information about the area and things to do. Good for a toilet stop as well as you arrive or leave McLaren Vale.

Great little Cafe and the barrister makes a wonderful coffee! Thanks Ella 😊
Set in amongst the vineyards, it makes for a beautiful setting for a wedding. In fact, we were married there!! Just don't rely on the wine tasters to not invade the ceremony...

Great wineries and good new road infrastructure. Very undulating. Pity that the GoogleMaps haven’t yet caught up with it and updated, so you might be taken the long, and sometimes precarious, way around. Especially if you’re towing a heavy caravan.

Attended a kids bday party here, it was a great venue for this type of thing. Playground for the kids and booze for the adults. Gift shop and art gallery were nice, great for tourists as a one stop shop but as a local can’t see my self going back regularly. Loved the gin distillery inside.
