Very little infrastructure with a very rough road through the park. Definitely need a good 4wd with supplies/recovery gear and wouldn't recommend traveling alone. But spectacular countryside and a good place to have a swim at Desert Queen Bath but very cold water.

Karlamilyi National Park (Rudall River National Park until 2008) lies in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, 250 kilometres (160 mi) northeast of Newman and 1,250 kilometres (780 mi) north-northeast of Perth. Proclaimed an A Class Reserve on 13 April 1977, it is the largest national park in Western Australia.

The Rudall River National Park was listed on the Register of the National Estate in 1978 and was noted as "significant for maintaining ongoing geomorphic and ecological processes within a tropical desert environment. It contains an entire landscape sequence which includes extensive dune fields, table lands, an entire river/creek system, alluvial formations, saline lakes and palaeodrainage lines". The name of the park was changed in 2008 to Karlamilyi National Park to acknowledge the traditional owners of the area.

Rudall River was originally named by Frank Hann who was one of the first Europeans to explore the area. He named the river after another explorer and surveyor, William Frederick Rudall.

The area is traditionally Martu country, called Karlamilyi.There are two Aboriginal communities within the park: Parnngurr (Cotton Creek) and Punmu (Lake Dora). The park is situated across the boundary between the Little Sandy Desert and the Great Sandy Desert and includes the catchment area of the Rudall River. It is best accessed from the Rudall River Road which connects the Talawana Track in the south, and the Telfer Mine Road in the north. There are no ranger facilities within the park. Fuel, groceries, emergency medical facilities, camping gear, caravan parking and laundry are available at Parnngurr.

The banks of the Rudall River are lined with tall stands of collibah, river gum and yulbah – the bats wing coral tree. Hardy acacias and hakeas occupy smaller watercourses, while paperbarks, bloodwoods and quandongs are in the valleys where there is sufficient ground water. Desert oaks may occure on sandplains, with spinifex and other grasses and small shrubs.

Rainfall is very erratic here, usually associated with cyclones and monsoonal activity between December and May. Permanent pools of the Rudall River are an oasis to 14 species of water birds. There are over 140 bird species recorded in the park with most observed near the river.

Reptiles are hardy arid land survivors and include Stimson’s python, the gwardar snake, numerous skinks and geckoes, dragon-lizards and goannas.. There are seven species of bat, marsupial mice, red kangaroos and rock wallabies. Most are nocturnal to avoid the heat of day, coming out at dusk till dawn. Feral animals you may see during the day include camels and donkeys.

Parnngurr is a small indigenous Community situated in on the edge of Karlamilyi national park. The Community has a school, clinic, KJ rangers office and a shop aling with decent housing for community members. You can buy groceries as well refuel your vehicles at the shop if you are going aling the Canning stock route. The community members are very friendly and helpful. It is a dry Community so no alcohol can be brought in.
Beware of the camels in the Community. Don't try to pet them or go close to take photos as they get aggressive.
