Love, love, love the humbug experience! Our go-to for exciting and flavoursome food matched with unbeatable service. We’re spoilt to have such elevated dining in our home town of Newcastle. Steph and Mike have thought of every detail with a beautiful atmosphere and fantastic soundproofing. We had my bridal shower here last year and they catered amazingly to the large group and numerous dietary requirements. We were blown away with the care taken and options available. We keep coming back again and again for date nights, birthdays, anniversaries. Can’t get enough!

Our favourite go to for special event dining, birthdays, out of town visitors and just because. As always Steph and Mike were the best hosts/chef/front-of-house combo, and were incredibly welcoming and delightfully friendly. For a full multi course lunch with wine we paid about $95/person and everything was superb! Wine list, especially the Inzolia by Majama was also excellent. We will be back xx

My husband and I had the pleasure of dining here choosing the vegan feed me menu…and my goodness it was amazing from start to finish. From the moment you step foot in the restaurant you are greeted from friendly staff, a stunning space to relax and enjoy a drink from the well thought out wine list. All the staff are personable and are happy to accommodate any needs. Thank you for a wonderful evening guys we will be back!!

Humbug has an enjoyable simplicity without replicating stuff you can easily cook at home. You’ll find this modern Italian pasta joint on Newcastle’s main drag. The menu is split between snacks and shareable pastas; and you’ll want to order some of them both.

From the snacks, the OAD ($7/each) should be a given. This former menu favourite sees an Ortiz anchovy draped over piped Parmesan custard on a danish pastry. It was resurrected for their third birthday celebrations, and goes well with the Domaine Naturaliste Artus Chardonnay ($120) from their small producer focused wine list.

Gob-stopping wagyu short rib potato bun sliders ($51/3) dragged through gravy are a wicked way to make sure nobody is gunna leave hungry. Charcoal Murray cod ($57/3) is a fancy way to eat fish’n’chips: a wedge of crisp skinned fish, a decadent mini-hash brown and some iceberg lettuce in yoghurt to make you feel like it’s a ‘healthy’ option.

Bonito remained the star in the market fish tataki ($30) set off by celery pickle, citrus and seaweed. It arrived with the house-made sourdough focaccia ($5/head), which was only sad because it was so good we ate it all before the campanelle ($36) arrived. The ruffled cones of pasta teamed with king prawns and chilli fennel crunch had a sauce that warranted mopping. Ramen butter and barely-set seared scallop slices stuck so well to the bucatini ($40) no bread was necessary there, just some springy-fresh Newcastle-grown greens ($12) in eschallot verjus dressing: bellissimo!

Ok so it’s been a while since I’ve really said I loved all the food at a place - but here it is! The food here, all of it was OUTSTANDING!! Finally a shared menu where I liked it all - fresh and tasty food; from eggplant to pork belly and fresh pastas, not to mention pistachio ice cram and pannacotta @humbugnewcastle is a winner in my books. Staff were also very patient with a big group of gals celebrating Christmas
