Great service here. We popped in for a quick bite for lunch. We were originally thinking of takeaway but how could you not stop here and enjoy the atmosphere and the 'sing-a-long' background music. We ordered nothing fancy to eat, and the drinks straight out of the fridge but we enjoyed everything immensely….You can sit inside or dine outside. Well done to the very happy and efficient team. Gee, good ol' fashioned service, doesn't that make a difference, which I am reflecting in this rating.

Excellent discovery. Strange we only live 30 kms away and travel past fairly frequently and never realised it has become a cafe. When I last looked was a milk bar. Good food. Partner said pasta was delicious and my burger was just the right size - not too big and not too small. Chips very very crisp and fresh. We also got large milkshakes. Thick and creamy and in the traditional metal cup. Some outdoor seating for us with dogs, although is limited. Be nice to expand it out a bit (not sure if it’s a home or storeroom immediately next door but it’s flat out front). Take care. The menu appears to have mainly breakfast stuff on it. Lunch items like what we ordered were on a blackboard inside that you might miss. Recommend.

I had the best cheeseburger I've ever had here today. It's maybe not always on their menu as it was on the specials board but I could tell they cared a lot about the quality of every ingredient that went into it. Well recommended!

Such beautiful food and friendly service at a good price. Best pub food for family dinning that I haven’t had for a long time. Nice wood fireplace too! Would definitely come back next time when I’m around Castlemaine.

Very disappointed with the current chef’s attitude this morning with regards to my mum’s allergy. The waitstaff were lovely and assured us that they could cater for Mum’s alpha-gal allergy and that they’d ask the chef to come to the table to discuss food options for Mum. I then watched closely while the waitress discussed the allergy with the chef and saw a very rude and negative attitude from the new female chef - immediate vigorous head shaking and a snappy response that she could not cook anything for her. The chef didn't even come to the table out of courtesy to chat with Mum. The wait staff then had to awkwardly inform us that they couldn't provide any food for Mum, after the rest of the table had ordered and our meals were already being prepared. We therefore didn't have the choice to leave and find another cafe that could cater for Mum, so she tearily watched the rest of us eat. I couldn't enjoy my meal because Mum was quite obviously upset and am incredibly disappointed because I've had such lovely experiences at Five Flags Merchants in the past and was excited to take my mum to one of my favourite cafes.

It frustrates me that the new chef was so rude and negative. Any kitchen with an appropriate standard of hygiene can prevent cross-contamination with allergens by preparing ingredients in a seperate, washed pan. It's not that hard to cook up eggs, mushrooms, tomatoes and toast in a way that ensures no contact with meat or dairy allergens. Ensuring zero cross-contamination by maintaining appropriate kitchen hygiene is standard in the Victorian hospitality industry. I hope the new female chef is upskilled by management to ensure she is in line with current standards and the high quality of customer service that the rest of the staff of Five Flags Merchants display. It saddens me to provide such a negative review for a cafe that I have only had positive experiences at in the past.
