We were here to observe the Platypus in the wild but we didn't see any. Probably because we came too late in the morning as this animal is active in the early morning and evening. Honestly. This reserve is probably your best chance to see them in the wild especially during the bleeding season.

The quiet and patient observer might be lucky. We had to give it three visits until we spotted two platypus. We got to see them around 6:30 in the evening. Best chances should be during dawn and dust, as usual. Absolutely lovely animals but easily scared by noise and spectators.

Beautiful little hidden gem. We visited just before 9:00. Didn't see any platypus but the mist made it a memorable short walk.

We decided to check this place out after seeing it in one of our guidebooks.

A nice short walk next to the creek. It was relaxing to take in the fresh and cool Australian air and enjoy the serenity. We spotted lots of birds and some pademelons along the walk.

Before we left, as we were relaxing on one of the benches along the creek, we even spotted a small platypus heading downstream!

No guarantees to see every species but a nice walk nonetheless.

Fern Glade Reserve is less than 4ks from the centre of Burnie. We went with a family friend, he was kind enough to share this secret gem with us while we were visiting. The perfect riverside walk is both a tranquil oasis, and a local treasure. We parked pretty close to the entry to give privacy to others and found a shaded spot on the soft grass to watch the water, listen to the local birds and look for bubbles caused by platypus in the river.

There is an easy, beginner, level track that takes you through the shady tranquility of soft tree-ferns.

There are a great offering of good picnic facilities, such as fixed table and benches which were being highly utilised. A really lovely spot for a cook up, escape from the busy hours of the day and enjoy a peaceful relaxing stroll.

We didn’t spot any platypus, however, apparently you may have more luck in the early morning or dusk.

We visited at 2pm-ish. Lovely for a snooze by the water and watching out of bubbles in the water.

No dogs.
No feeding ducks and or hens.
Please take your rubbish home with you.

Google states that the reserve closes at 5:30pm, however there was a sign that said it closes at sunset which gave us more time than we thought. Plenty of car parking spaces. Toilets and picnic spots available. The reserve itself is quiet and peaceful. We didn’t see any platypus, nevertheless, enjoyed a walk.
