We absolutely loved our recent stay at the Criterion Hotel. The young staff member had trouble with their booking software, but we were checked in quickly and were thrilled by our room and the facilities provided for guests. The room was a lovely size and a generous sized bed and room to move within the room. The showers and bathroom facilities are just a few doors down and again lovely big, clean showers and bathroom space. There is a well appointed guest lounge with lovely big sofas to relax on and tea and coffee available. We would absolutely stay here again when passing through Gundagai.

Perfect country bistro. Staying nearby as stop through to Sydney. Was easy to get to, car parks available out front. Simple pub meals, including a good range for the kids. Everyone happily ate their meals. People were lovely and helpful, service staff were supportive.

After a long drive we welcomed a nights rest and stayed at the Criterion. NEVER AGAIN. We were woken after 12mn by a juitbox playing very loud music.
My husband went downstairs and spoke to the lady behind the bar. Very indifferent and said they had a license until 2am. If you have people staying in their accommodation; this is not acceptable to have the volume at such a high level. The volume was turned down slightly but still loud.
You may only be paying $101 for a room but be prepared for a disruptive sleep.
Not Recommended.

Maybe the pub was short staffed when we went, or perhaps they had other troubles. It wasn't very crowded, (we were there between 5.30 and 7pm) and we were not happy with our meal.
We were spending the ANZAC Day long weekend in Gundagai and asked a local shop owner where they recommend a great pub meal on Saturday night. They spoke highly of the meals at the Criterion but we found our meals were disappointing. The chicken schnitzel (for the parma) was deep fried to a solid crisp, the salad was limp and the chips had absorbed steam or salad moisture and were mushy and watery. My friend had two crumbed cutlets, which looked to be coated with the same mixture and cooked in the same deep fryer as the schnitzel. There was a lot of crumb and very little meat on the cutlets (for $28).
A couple at our caravan park said they had asked for chips as well as mashed potato with their bangers and mash - but only got chips.

The pub has amazing potential. Separate rooms divide the TV sports and drinking from the pokies, and two pool tables also have a room of their own with an "out of order" juke box on the wall. A game of pool costs $2, which was good value and we had fun with that.

Outside on the deck was a man playing guitar with backing music he had brought along, which set the atmosphere for a quiet drink and meal with background music. He played well.

After our half-eaten meals, the games of pool and losing $6 to the broken juke box, we called an early night. Driving home, we passed another place along the same street and noticed it was packed with people enjoying their meals. The car park was also quite full there and we felt immediate food envy. We stopped at Woolworths on the way home and bought food to prepare for ourselves.
