Upon Googling for a nice place for lunch, I stumbled across the Clock & Bull. Well from the time we entered this gorgeous ornate tudor building till we finished our lunch, we were blown away with the excellent service, chiming of the cookoo clocks, different flavoured boutique beers and scrumptious food, all run like clockwork (intended pun). Loved the stained glass front doors. Loved the wooden interior and German decor. Loved the cookoo clocks. Hubby and I shared a pork belly entree, so tasty! Then a juicy topping packed pizza, yuuum! Nothing felt rushed, nor crowded and the service was fantastic. Bookings are required as it is very popular. We both totally recommend.

Owners have done a great job of setting the old clock shop up as a brewery. Nice areas inside and outside. Beer is good.

On Thursday, we went to Toowoomba, first visiting Spotlight, then the Clock and Bull Brewhouse at Cabarlah for a cold iced coffee and lunch; I ordered a margarita pizza and explored the new place and its cuckoo clocks while waiting. This was my friend’s first visit, but I have been there many times since moving to The Summit near Stanthorpe 20 years ago. It was previously the Black Forest Hill Cuckoo Clock Centre, selling German gifts like cups and kids’ toys, and featuring grandfather clocks, which they no longer have. It is my favourite place to go, and I will definitely return for lunch. We then visited the Bead place at Highfields, the Chocolate Cottage, Grand Central’s bookshop, and had an iced mocha from a pop-up cafe before heading home with a stop at Woolworths.

There is parking around the back.
We went in mid-May. It was a cool evening, and the exterior doors were open, creating a cold room.
The outside area was really pretty with fairy lights in the tree.
The welcome was warm, though.
Our wait for food wasn't too long, but my chicken schnitzel was nice, but a bit too crunchy. The other members of our group were happy with their meals.

I’ve been to the Clock and Bull numerous times, most recently last Thursday for lunch.
My son had the kids pizza, so great to see a kids meal come out looking like a smaller version of an adults. It looked so fresh and clearly used quality ingredients with generous toppings. I had the Thursday lunch special which was a chicken schnitzel with chips, salad and gravy. I also added a calamari topper. Everything was cooked perfectly but omgosh the calamari was some of the best I have ever had. Crumbed and seasoned to perfection and just melt in your mouth. I had a schooner of beer (they had some great options on tap) and my son had a can of sprite. All of this cost just under $50. The two girls who were on that day were absolute 10/10, which just topped off the whole experience. We love having a great local place that serves quality food, has great staff and a lovely ambiance that is family friendly.

UPDATE: I appreciate the owner getting in touch and offering a refund. While the overcharge wasn't ideal, its not like we're talking about getting overcharged $50 so I am happy to let the matter be settled. I did want to mention that the voicemail seemed a bit abrupt, and I wasn't able to answer the call since it came from a private number. I hope you understand. I've left a message with your staff, and I'm open to discussing our experience further if you'd like to call back from a regular number.

The Clock & Bull: A Ticking Time Bomb for Your Patience (and Your Wallet)

The Clock & Bull, on the surface, seemed like a charming spot for a family meal. They were incredibly accommodating, finding us a perfect spot to park our pram, a small victory in the often-fraught world of dining with an infant. And the food? Absolutely delicious. Every dish that made it to our table was cooked to perfection, a solid 5/5 culinary experience. Sadly, that's where the praise ends.

Our first challenge was the seating – hardwood chairs that would make a monk reconsider his vow of silence. After 45 minutes of waiting (yes, you read that right, 45 MINUTES!), my backside was numb and my soul weary. To add insult to injury, they managed to mess up three of our meals. Now, everyone makes mistakes, but this level of culinary confusion is worthy of its own reality TV show.

And then there's the matter of the bill. In the chaos of a crying child and the desperate need to escape the medieval torture devices masquerading as chairs, I blindly tapped my card. Later, I realized the total was significantly higher than expected. It seems we were charged for an extra parmi and some phantom sides. I suspect the wait staff, in their order-fumbling frenzy, accidentally added items instead of removing them.

But wait, there's more! The septic tank out back needs some serious attention. Let's just say the aroma wafting from the carpark was less "country air" and more "biohazard zone."

To his credit, Darren (presumably the owner) offered us a round of drinks on our next visit. A nice gesture, but I'm not sure I'm ready to risk another encounter with those chairs, the chaotic service, or the potential for surprise charges.

Overall, the Clock & Bull gets a 2/5. Delicious food, but the abysmal service, questionable billing practices, and pungent plumbing issues make it a place I won't be rushing back to.

Lovely renovation done on the old Coocoo clock building. Walking in you are awe struck with beautiful wood work all round and the dotting of clocks on the walls and other antiques. Menu has a great selection of items and flavour combinations. We ordered the Beef burger with a side of calamari (which ended up being a steak burger for the day, no biggy) and the Coocoo chicken. Hubby devoured it and the steak was tender and easy eating, messy burgers are the best and the calamari was chunky slightly seasoned and well cooked. I had the chicken, great flavours only criticism is it needed just a bit more sauce to help with the slight dryness of the breast. Other then that very happy with both meals. Will definitely be back.
