My mother and father in law attend respite care at the Brunswick Community Centre up to 3 times a week. They travel from their home at Ballina on a community bus and the whole experience is very positive. The activities they participate in vary from music and exercise to games and puzzles. The staff are warm, caring and communicate very well.

My father has been attending the Byron Shire Respite Service day programme at the centre for over two years now. The social interactions, the activities and the familiar faces of both other clients and staff each week has such a positive effect on him…. His favourite day of the week!
The staff are not only supportive of him, but also of me in my role as carer, offering advice and support with warmth and no judgement.

Exceptional Care!
As an Occupational Therapist working in Aged Care in the Ballina Byron area, I regularly refer elderly clients who require social support and shopping assistance to Byron Shire Respite Service. Over the years, when I was seeking one-on-one supports for my clients (through the Commonwealth Home Support Programme), they were the one organisation in the area that I found to be consistently willing and eager to take on these referrals. The response from clients who I have referred to them has been universally positive.
I have recently had personal experience with their service when a close family friend developed dementia and required one-on-one support as well as the Social Group. He was previously very isolated and lonely, and attending the Byron Shire Respite social groups has changed his life, and provided a richness and connection that was previously so lacking. The team at Byron Shire Respite provide exceptional care. I can’t praise them highly enough.

Like all care facilities they seem to deliver ok service, but fail to keep staff long term which made my father in law very uneasy with a different carer turning up every other week.
