Beautiful big dam. There is a lovely picnic area at the base of the dam wall. There are toilet facilities here. The road up to the top of the wall was not open when we were there - so maybe check if you wish to do this.

Pro - The Pines campground is truly amazing, watching the clouds resting on top of the hills and the trout jumping out of the water, whilst black cockatoos fly over head is awesome. The stars at this altitude and location are stunning too.
Con - Campers leave too much rubbish behind, run generators as soon as the sun starts to dip to run massive banks of tripod flood lights, must be scared of the dark. Sound travels a long way here, you can overhear every conversation, even over the top of the generator.

We were so pleasantly surprised when we discovered this little piece of paradise. After staying on the Tumut river, we were excited to find a place where we could actually swim. The Tumut river is freezing cold and the current is way to strong to swim in. So 30 minutes away, we found the perfect spot where the water is warm, still, shallow and perfect for the kids to go swimming, fishing and floating around on their blow up toys.
If you have a boat then bring it down. Skiing is at the top of the list out here.
The best part of it all is that the camping is FREE!!! I plan to go back with my friends and family for my birthday weekend. Under the stars, by this perfect swimming hole. I couldn't think of anything better.
4 out of 5 because it's a bit muddy, no shade and dirty toilet is quiet a walk to get to.

Just a short 6km drive off the highway in the Tumut area. Incredible site of an earth dam. The hydro power station operates regularity. Parks and toilets. Worth the stop if you are in the area!

We had a whole camp to ourselves on the bottom of the Reservoir at Yolde camp...(Dust storm day we arrived.) didn't deter us though
Getting down there was a bit rough.managed in our Foton and Bailey van.... Beaut spot with running creek... lovely and grassy.. Sad to see it so empty tho... If going to bottom need to be self sufficient and responsible and take rubbish home... Long drop at what is normal camping site. Nice short drive to Talbingo for supplies.. Or back 38ks to Tumut....other sites similar... long drive to base... If any water worth it tho... To have been able to see this been built back in the 60's on a school day trip and find 50+ years I'd be camping on the base.... Sad tho... Had fun walking along the water trial n its little water falls and building my little Stonehenge's....
Lots to see around Tumut/Talbingo...
Jounama Reservoir at Talbingo with the Snowy Hydro hydro just out of town..

Amazing place to camp out around the water, slept outside on the grass using only my sleeping bag, it was the best sleep I ever had.
We also entered through the state forest,
Win win.
