After co-leading a three week class to Cairns in 2010 without working with a local ecotouring company, I was exhausted from navigating our way around, driving our mini vans, and cooking for the students - leaving us very little time and energy to teach students about the ecology, conservation, or sustainability lessons we came to study, not to mention missing many opportunities to see local flora and fauna because I was unaware of the best locations to view them. After discovering Small World Journeys (SWJ), that all changed. My colleague and I were able to focus on the student learning outcomes and let our logistics team handle all the planning, driving, meals, as well as enhance the experience with their incredible list of fun and engaging local guides, and biodiversity, conservation, cultural and art experts. We wanted a number of adventurous experiences to study the array of biodiversity Far North Queensland has to offer from the Great Barrier reef, Outback, tablelands and Wet Tropics rainforests, meeting with Aboriginal leaders to learn about their culture, and see examples of conservation and sustainability throughout the trip. Incredibly, all of our requests were attended to. Having now taken three classes to Australia booked with SWJ, I can tell you that the outcomes have been exactly what was intended. My colleagues and I are able to focus on our work and still enjoy the time there and the student and faculty experiences exceeded all expectations! I can’t imagine a more resourceful or professional partner to work with than SWJ!
