RFBI was the first place I called when my mother was unexpectedly and urgently in need of nursing care.
The person that answered the phone was unhelpful, showed no understanding and was rude.
After trying to dissuade me from trying, she told me she would email me the application for the waiting list; this never happened.
It left me feeling hopeless after the first call I made looking for help.
I would not trust them to care for vulnerable people.

This place is horrible. No compassion. My mother was here in this facility for less than a year. Yes, inspite of my mother's resistance they still administer morphine & all other types of medicines to restrict her so they won't be bothered or disturbed. The food not appealing. The staff are just there for the money.

My Mum has recently entered this facility with stroke and dementia issues and the staff and Faye have been wonderful in dealing with her ups and downs from the disease. They are always willing to be professional and patient with her regardless of her own struggles. I couldn't recommend it enough for its family atmosphere. Mike.

Beautiful, glossy brochures and photos on their website are far from reality and expectations when you get there, a lack of maintainence is very obvious wherever you look. Weeds everywhere in garden beds and paths, overgrown shrubbery, a dead, empty pond and water feature, peeling paint and rotting timber are there to greet you. The room, though basic, was adequate.
My mother was admitted, and a blessing really, only endured the facility for five weeks before her passing, The negative far outweigh the positive for this place, starting the very first day she moved in. Upon arrival, she was left alone in her room, and had a fall on the way to the bathroom. When I arrived shortly afterwards to settle her in, I witnessed her lying on the floor through the locked glass sliding door. How was my mother feeling lying there - in pain, crying and helpless! I urgently notified staff at reception, when nurses arrived I was denied access to the room, and the curtains were quickly closed in front of me. After finally being allowed in and looking at her, there was obvious bruising to her face and right arm. THEN.. the negative continues - a hearing aid was lost, and the other squashed when run over with a trolley. Along with two pairs of reading glasses lost, no compensation or apology was offered. One visit, she was wearing someone else’s diamond ring? An urgent phone call that my mother was dehydrated! I then find the cup of water placed too far away from her that she couldn’t reach it? ‘Gourmet Meals’ - pasta, custard and tinned fruit. She complained that staff handling her were.. “ a bit rough”. A fall out of bed onto a hard vinyl floor, staff saying that crash mats were there. When she was admitted to Calvary Hospital Emergency Dept the examining head nurse (who said that she had previously worked in an aged care home) pointed out that my mother's injuries weren’t consistent with landing on a crash mat! Your word against there's, and no witnesses - deceitful, but very convenient! The doctor at Kalparrin advised to give my mother morphine for pain relief, when her notes (and myself), clearly stated that she was ALERGIC to morphine (took that as.. it doesn’t matter, she’s going to die anyway). They then advised that she could be given synthetic morphine, and that, as it was now after 3pm (the daily collection had already been done), it wouldn’t be collected until the following morning, due to staff not being available to go back to the chemist. Family members offered to go on their behalf, but this was denied. It was then promised to be available to my mother by 9am the following morning, via a syringe driver, this didn’t eventuate until 11:05am!! By that time, my mother, a religious person, was hysterical and yelling in excruciating pain, "Please take me god, I just want to die". No amount of comforting would help ease her stress. A totally avoidable, and horrendous thing to witness, a lasting memory family members will now live with...
The mostly negative manager didn't even know Covid restrictions for end of life! Family were initially denied access to see my mother, until a phone call by a relative to an ACT Government Dept confirmed that five people were allowed in the room at one time, not two, as stated. This should have been known, and would have saved precious time and anguish for all - or maybe the person involved was just being difficult? One saving grace for this entire debacle, a staff member by the name of Saskia, a truely genuine, caring person.
My mother, a kind lady, and former retired nurse.. treated this way. Overall, a disrespectful and immoral sequence of events. Not even the courtesy of a sympathy card or phone call after her death, they were quick to send out the final bill though. Management, and RFBI for that matter, lack of decency and thoughtless attitude was clearly then verified and made evident.. just another number! NEXT..
From my experience, this place I would never recommend.. I cringe every time I see it!

My Dad, who passed away recently spent his last 18 months here. Although the interior is a little tired in places, the care he received here was second to none. Not an easy man to please, Dad really enjoyed the food particularly 'fish and chip Friday' as it became known to his family and the roast chicken. He never once complained about the food or the wonderful carers or cleaning staff. With the covid 19 epidemic, the facility shut down before it became compulsory which made life difficult for Dad but was clearly the right thing to do. The treatment provided to Dad and our family members in his last days was caring and compassionate and we thank you all so very much.

The respite care is run like a prison with almost no access to loved ones. Whoever decided to lockdown the place based on COVID has no empathy for the mental health of those in their care. Canberra has not had a COVID case in three months but these bureaucrats are inflexible.
