We enjoyed this place very much — there’s so much to learn about railway history!
There’s a great variety of steam and diesel locomotives on display, and everything is very well presented. One of the highlights was the miniature railway that runs around the museum every 30 minutes, which was a lot of fun, especially for kids.
There’s also a train compartment open for visitors to explore, which gave us a real sense of how it would have felt to travel back in the day.
Entrance fee is $19 per adult, toilets are available, and there’s plenty of parking on-site. Definitely a fantastic and educational day out for families!

My last visit was over twenty years ago, still a wonderful experience for both train nuts and those with no knowledge of Australian rail history.
A very passionate group of rail enthusiast volunteers ready and willing to chat about all things rail.

A fantastic railway museum right next to the train station at Port Dock!
Part of a series of museums in Port Adelaide you can visit and get stamps for all 4 of them and make it a full day trip out.
There is a little miniature train run around the museum that you can hop on and off during the visit included in your tickets.
The museum is quite big with under cover areas and an outdoor area, links to different sections.
The history of the national railway in the area and the displays of older models of the trains are fantastic!

I was like a big nerdy kid in a candy store after visiting the national railway museum in port Adelaide. They have several sheds packed full of heritage steam and diesel locomotives, heritage carriages and interactive exhibits. There is even a model railway and a miniature railway that takes you on a lap of the museum facility. The staff are friendly and welcoming and for any history or train lover this is a must do when in Adelaide. I enjoyed learning about how the rails helped open up the country and the life of those working in the outback.

A great place to visit for railway enthusiasts. A large collection of display trains with friendly and knowledgeable staff. There is a complementary mini train ride but check with staff for the timetable. The ride takes you through the old yard not accessible on foot. Incredible to see the restorations done and in progress.

This has to be one of the best places to visit if you’re in the area. There’s so much history hiding in every nook and I’m yet to not discover something new every time I visit. There’s staff are always friendly and ready to assist, even if it’s a busy day. Every little part of this museum is put together with as much care and attention to detail so as nothing gets missed. Not to mention if you look inside or outside you’re likely to find a piece of rolling stock that catches your eye and it always changes every time. I truly believe this is one of the best museums someone could ever visit. I look forward to returning every time.
