We had a fantastic three-night stay in The Roost and enjoyed two excellent half-day birdwatching tours. The accommodation was lovely and cosy, providing everything we needed for a comfortable stay and it was a delight to simply relax outside, watching the many birds come and go.||Michael and Louise are a font of knowledge. Their passion and care for the land and environment are heartwarming indeed. Their expertise made the birdwatching tours both educational and deeply enjoyable.||We highly recommend Explore the Mallee and look forward to visiting again!

Had an unforgettable birdwatching trip here! I was lucky to spot some truly special species, including Malleefowl, Grasswren, and Pink Cockatoo—such an amazing experience!

Michael is incredibly knowledgeable, not only in finding birds but also in botany. His expertise and passion made the trip even more enjoyable and informative.

The accommodation was warm and cozy, providing a perfect place to relax after a day of birding. Plus, the Bird Hide is an absolute dream location for bird photography—excellent lighting and great angles!

Highly recommended for both experienced birdwatchers and beginners. A must-visit destination!

Ideal location to enjoy the mallee and it's unique wildlife. The quiet of the location makes a perfect canvas for bird watching and photography. The night sky was thoroughly impressive, too. Michael and Louise are fantastic hosts who are incredibly generous with their knowledge (and binoculars- we left ours at home). A tour of their patch is a MUST for any visitors. We highly recommend and hope to return soon.

Hosts Louise and Michael are exceptionally thoughtful-from the moment we arrived, they made us feel warmly at home. They patiently answered all our questions about local plants, birds, and "magical little critters," even sharing the best times and spots to observe them.
Don't miss the guided tour of the property with Michael! He not only shared the history of the land and their current eco-management philosophy but also helped us identify birds and their calls among the Mallee flora. The highlight was visiting an active malleefowl mound, topped only by spotting a pair of these shy birds feeding at dusk-an unforgettable pinnacle to our nature immersion!
The roost is simple yet wonderfully comfortable. After two nights here, we're already planning our return to this rustic retreat. If you crave a peaceful escape and a profound connection with nature, this is the ultimate destination!

I don't usually write reviews (in fact, this will be the first) but my experience with Explore the Mallee was 10/10. I stayed at The Roost with a friend for three nights in early December and it was the perfect base for exploring the nearby national parks. The accommodation was very comfortable and had everything we needed, the hosts Louise and Michael were incredibly welcoming, and the guided day tour through Hattah-Kulkyne NP was downright epic. Up there with the best day's birding ever.

Explore the Mallee was a genuinely unique experience. We stayed for four nights, and also did morning and evening tours of the property, a full day tour of Hattah-Kulkyne National Park, and spent some time at the bird hides. Michael and Louise were absolutely wonderful hosts, who were unendingly generous with their time, expertise, and company. The sunsets over the mallee are stunning and we ended up with unbelievable views of the malleefowl on the back bush property, in addition to many other local specialities. ||The Roost is a cozy space with a beautiful outlook from the porch and a well appointed kitchenette - just make sure to pack sandals for late night bathroom trips, as the bathroom and shower are in the same building but accessed from the exterior. The muesli and fruit supplied were really delicious and all locally sourced. ||Overall the stay felt truly special and Michael and Louise really made us feel at home and helped us enjoy every second of our experience in the mallee. Highly recommended, particularly for birdwatchers!

It was a joy to witness a once farmed property being restored to valuable wildlife habitat. Michael took me on a tour of the property to see regenerated blocks, land recovering and a parcel of native bushland, where two bird hides afford excellent photography. Walking with Louise in the native bush block I appreciated the huge variety of plant species we brushed past, culminating at an active Malleefowl mound. The birds unseen but heard – the male bird called eerily from nearby. Michael and Louise’s commitment and knowledge are impressive. If you want to escape the city for a spell the hosts have a rustic ‘Roost’ which is modest but comfortable accommodation for two people. I loved the peace and quiet, watching the constant visitors to the birdbaths and taking strolls around the yard. There is also much to see national parks and reserves nearby. I loved my four-night stay. Thank you Michael and Louise for being great hosts. I plan to return.

We had a fabulous couple of days here, photographing and watching birds. A constant procession of dry country parrots and honeyeaters came to the bird baths in the front yard and in the evening Micheal took us out looking for mallee fowl (which I had specifically came hoping to see)– he spotted a pair for us within minutes and then another pair very soon after. Michael and Louise are lovely hosts too. Highly recommend it as a place to stay especially if you're interested in bird and nature.
