In June of 2021 my wife and I flew from Los Angeles where we live to spend the last few days with my dying Father on the Gold Coast. Even though the federal government had granted us permission to do so in covid times, the NSW government told us that we’d need to transfer from Sydney where we landed to the Gold Coast using a private charter because of covid restrictions. So just before we boarded in Los Angeles we called a few charter companies in Australia and Mark from Australia By Air was the only one that actually answered our call. Not only that but he was incredibly helpful and understanding of our unique situation. Their representative met us at the Sydney airport with a plane waiting for us on the runway and she walked us through all the covid bureaucracy at the airport. However, the Queensland government decided at the last moment to not let us enter Queensland even thought we were fully vaccinated and so we were whisked off to a hotel quarantine in Sydney against our wishes. We mounted a huge fight in the media to get the Queensland government to allow us to travel in to see our dying father. It took us 8 days during which Mark and Andy from Australia By Air were incredibly understanding and patient. They basically said they would have a plane available for us at any moment the permission might come through. And when it did we had absolutely the best care and service you could ask for from them. The flight itself was wonderful and the poor pilot wasn’t allowed to visit the toilet once we landed at the Gold Coast Airport. He had to fly right back to Sydney (without passengers as per covid regulations) with a full bladder. And not a single complaint. What stands out for me is not that the whole operation was perfectly handled by Australia By Air, but that Mark and Andy were more than just service providers. They were so amazingly supportive and helpful through all the tears and frustration we experienced. It comes down to people in the end. And I will never forget the empathy and understanding that they showed us in our most difficult time. Every charter company has a plane. But I doubt they have the quality of people that Mark and Andy proved to be. I thank you guys from the bottom of my heart. And I know it meant the world to my Dad for us to be able to be with him in the last few days of his life.
