This is a fun photo op and the perfect place to enjoy a Winton sunset. The first time we went there we ended up hanging out with a couple of rodeo clowns and the director of tourism for Winton. There are also some German travelers. The sunset was stunning. The orange hang on the horizon for what seemed like hours as we talked, took photos and enjoyed the view.

This is a great spot to take photos, to admire the outback sunset, and to meet new people as you admire the sky and thousands of galahs. Stick around for the 20 mins post-sunset for the best colours. Better to wear covered-up clothing the later you stay; the mozzies come out around 15 mins after sunset

Prepare yourself for two types of photoshoot: silhouette and jump. To respect the long queue of people, try to practice the jumps you like and take videos in case you miss the best moment of jumps.

Brilliant sign of Winton to put itself on the map.

Okay it’s a great sign to park under but it’s a slightly rough road leading up to it. Your vehicle needs to be under 2.4 meters to fit under it and drive away (I learned this the hard way). Also some locals walk up to the sign and hang out every evening and often it’s hard to navigate around them.

A footnote on Winton. Kim and i have been discussing a new slogan for Winton Tourism. I think my personal fav is “Winton, where you will smell and taste decaying dinosaurs every time you run water from the tap !!”. Quite catchy i think incorporating Winton with Dinosaurs and their appauling water. This is an excelent way to put a good spin, particularly for kids, on something that could not pass Australian let alone WHO drinking water standards. Wintonites deserve better and if you travel there arrive with full tanks. The tap water smells and tastes like hydrogen sulphide and the only up side i could even imagine to this is that bugs and bacteria couldnt live in it.

The people were lovely, the dinosaur displays amazing, their water ………….
